Details: Amazon.ca It doesn’t take more than a track or two to figure out that Vancouver, BC’s Rascalz are representing a sound and style unique to the West Coast. This “Northwest Stylee,” as they call it, is a minimal, bass-bumping groove occasionally spiced up by a Caribbean sounding B3 Hammond organ. In fact, there is a definite reggae/Jamaican vibe throughout Reloaded. The rapping style is laid-back, augmented by a host of featured vocalists. No DMX-style aggression here, this is West Side smooth all the way. (That’s not to say there aren’t violent lyrics and caustic language, they are just delivered less confrontationally.) Though the core of Red1, Misfit and Kemo are responsible for the bulk of the production, performances and rhymes, it’s the array of guest appearances by the likes of K-OS, Kardinal Offishall, Checkmate and others that makes Reloaded such a well-rounded joint. The rapping is confident, clever and clear, the beats rock solid and the sound booming and bold. Track after track thumps away, tinged by island influences but fully flowing with Vancouver’s unique cosmopolitan flavor. --Adem Tepedelen
