More enjoyable is her character's uncouth disdain for pageant contestants and her mistaken perception that they're all a bunch of bimbos. The movie nicely charts Gracie's realization that her own pageant makeover provides a much-needed ego boost. In addition to Caine's effortless scene-stealing, pageant host William Shatner and organizer Candice Bergen are smart choices for comedic support (Shatner's a perfect Bert Parks wannabe), but the movie desperately needs a credible foundation for its comedy to really pay off. Bullock's bureau boss (Benjamin Bratt) is an unconvincing dimwit, and none of the plotting is as smart as say Beverly Hills Cop in combining procedure with laughs. The chemistry between Emma and both suitors is crackling and captured well on film by director Griffin Dunne. Thurman, Morgan, and Firth are joined by a supporting cast every bit as spot-on as they are: Sam Shepard, Brooke Adams, Isabella Rossellini, Sarita Choudhury, and Keir Dullea, each of whom brings his or her own quirks and charms. The Accidental Husband is very much in the mode of Four Weddings and a Funeral and the Bridget Jones films--which is to say, make a date with it for your next date night. --A.T. While this scenario might suggest a number of possibilities for Hanks to comment on generational angst or the economic recession of the Aughts, he pretty much focuses on Larry getting hipper and becoming attracted to his speech-class teacher, played by Julia Roberts. She's in loosey-goosey form, with a sparkling drunk scene and a few well-snapped put-downs (the latter mostly directed at her shiftless husband, Bryan Cranston). Larry has mildly happy experiences: front-lawn conversations with yard-sale neighbors Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson, budding friendship with a cute young Gen Y'er (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and her boyfriend (Wilmer Valderrama), and teacher's pet status with his econ prof (George Takei). For the most part, though, Hanks makes \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eLarry Crowne\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e as though conducting an experiment in how few serious conflicts you can put into a movie and still have it be a movie. Unfortunately, this means the film's pleasantness feels pretty slack, and while you may get a few smiles out of the situation, you won't get too many chortles.
