Exotica (Widescreen)
Details: Amazon.ca Until the filmmaker directed The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica was Atom Egoyan's most accessible film. True to form, the Toronto filmmaker mixes family and voyeurism, memory and desire, intimate wounds and public fantasies in this troubled and seductive urban tale. At L'Exotica, a club of Arab strippers, we meet a widower (Bruce Greenwood), fascinated by a young stripper (Mia Krishner); a supercharged DJ (Elias Koteas); a pregnant madam (Arsinée Khanjian), owner of the place; and a young gay man who smuggles exotic eggs (Don McKellar)! In the background, the police are looking for a missing child... The plots intersect, overlap, and respond to each other. At the center of this complex network of influences: sexuality. Sublimated, forbidden, magnified, trivialized or repressed, it is she who acts as a driving force for all these characters in search of baseness as much as heights. Complex in its form, Exotica is nevertheless the least cerebral of Egoyan's films. Abandoning formal concerns, as the story progresses, the filmmaker leads, with great skill, a suspense that will lead to a gripping finale. This 2 million dollar film which, on the screen, seems to have cost 10 times more, is as visually rich as it is emotional. The mark of a filmmaker in full possession of his means. Eric Fourlanty
