He brought a similar musical sensibility to Author Unknown--a roughly even balance of 1980s American New Wave and 1960s British pop--but dispensed with the spangled flares and silly hats. This modesty is at once this record's greatest strength and greatest weakness. There is nothing wrong with Author Unknown, as such--Falkner is a capable singer and a proficient songsmith, and the better moments, like \"I Go Astray\" and \"She Goes To Bed\" evoke fond recollections of the first Smithereens album.
