Details: Amazon.ca A few years after directing the deliciously perverted War of the Roses, prolific comedian Danny DeVito is throwing a fresh punch in the pond of clean, polished cinema with Death to Smoochy, a hilarious satire of the world of children's television. After being embroiled in a sordid affair of bribery and drugs, host Rainbow Randolph no longer makes little viewers laugh. The producers replace him with Smoochy, a pink plush rhinoceros man whose sincerity is matched only by good intentions. But will he be able to survive in this environment where crooked impresarios, jealous producers and the Irish mafia reign? To make us discover the dark underside of this childish universe, a priori harmless, Danny DeVito dips his pen into cynicism and visibly enjoys all this ferocity as much as we do. By conscientiously and systematically going beyond the limits, he delivers a completely refreshing achievement. With Robin Williams, in a delectable misuse, as a fallen and vengeful star with flowery language, and Edward Norton, perfect as a false naive, Death to Smoochy is an incisive comedy, sometimes frankly wicked but, above all, totally jubilant. And even if the nice end seems a little lazy and well-meaning, it does not manage to spoil this concentrate of “politically incorrect”. To savor! --Helen Faradji
