Brubeck never stops gigging, turning out intimate string quartets or grandiose compositions for classical orchestras but he's now reining back in to the format that made him famous. Bassist Jack Six and drummer Randy Jones are still on board, but alto saxophonist Bobby Militello is a more recent addition, helping to realise the varied stances of these tricky compositions. The leader's skewed, angular key phrases are clearly visible at some distance, his tunes compacted so that no solo overstays its welcome, divided equally between purposeful trotters and diaphanous ballads, even nodding to Bach during his Chorale.
