Recorded in the studio in Montreal (ToneBender and Planet III) and at Fred's chalet in Lac-Saint-Jean, Ultramarr was built with the help of longtime friends (Olivier Langevin on bass, François Lafontaine on synthesizers, Sam Jolly on drums). New collaborators are added to the nucleus: the brothers Andrew and Brad Barr and Joe Grass. Their touch can be heard in the hypnotic roundness of the guitars, in the glide of the pedal steel and the resonance of the dobro. The album takes us into a temperate folk universe deployed in the low notes, \"a winter album\", notes the main interested party. Side texts, the mood is dark, but not devoid of humor. \"I have a little heart patched with a blundering tape\", sings Fred and we immediately recognize his signature. Gratte is a song dug to the bone, Grippe an insomniac and anguished hymn, Molly a little western film. Twenty years after a first solo album entitled Joseph Antoine Frédéric Fortin Perron, Fred Fortin is making a comeback.
