Operation Market Garden, designed by British General Montgomery, attempted an unprecedented daring move: parachuting several British and American airborne divisions behind German lines, in order to capture several strategic bridges that would allow ground troops to cross the Rhine and to enter Germany directly. The combined attack of the airborne forces (Market) and the XXXth British armored corps (Garden) should make it possible to pierce the front to a depth of 100 km, and to reach the city of Arnhem, in the Netherlands, located on the Rhine bank, behind the third bridge to take. The operation should make it possible to end the war before Christmas 1944. But didn't Montgomery aim for a bridge too far? ......... The film begins with a montage of archival film footage narrated by a Dutch woman, Kate ter Horst, describing the state of affairs in September 1944. The Allied advance is being slowed by overextended supply lines. A Dutch family, part of the Dutch resistance underground, observes the German withdrawal toward Germany.
