Details: Amazon.ca After a disappointing attempt to crack the U.S. in 2000, teenage rockers Serial Joe clearly hope to create some new opportunities with (Last Chance) at the Romance Dance, an album that has a more varied pop sound than past discs. The band's spiky teen angst has been replaced by something much softer; whereas they used to rage against the machine, now Serial Joe want to be your teddy bears. The album title and graphics, showing the band members hanging out at a kitschy prom, are not as ironic as they initially seem, what with songs like "Girl Like You" (in which singer-guitarist Ryan Dennis pleads, "If you only knew/How much I need a girl like you") and the single "Completely" ("I want you to know that," he croons, "I need you to complete me.") Maybe Serial Joe really do want it that way. Elsewhere they create an Our Lady Peace-sized melodrama about an alcoholic girl in "Mary" and enlist a string section for the melancholy power ballad "Committed." But on the whole, the mood on (Last Chance) at the Romance Danceis very light. In fact, the music is so poppy, it brings to mind not the brat punk of Blink 182 or Sum 41 but the chunky, Cheap-Trick-in-junior-high rock of the Moffatts' album Submodalities. It's an unexpected step in the evolution of a young band that could just as easily have grown up to be another Staind or Disturbed, but it should entrance its desired audience of swoony adolescents. --Jason Anderson Product Description Serial Joe
