Details: Amazon.ca Celine Dion's Unison is a translation in more ways than one: the singer's English-language recording career and her subsequent climb toward true global divadom both start here. Already a pop commodity in Quebec and Europe for the better part of the '80s, the youthful chanteuse slanted her Euro-pop sound toward American ears, tapping such masters of songwriting floss as David Foster and Glen Ballard (among many others) for the 1990 album. That said, Unison doesn't exactly represent a giant leap in a new direction. On the contrary, Dion seems cautious. A scant year before sealing her success with "Beauty and the Beast" and she's but a wisp of her blustery future self--relatively speaking, of course. She keeps the pyrotechnical vocal stunts she's capable of to a minimum and instead wails/croons through a collection of tinkling pop ballads (radio hit "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," "If We Could Start Over") and highly processed funk-pop ("Love by Another Name," "Unison", "(If There Was) Any Other Way"). All the while, she manages to outshine the material and the production. While Dion would promptly outgrow some of the material, it's a true template for much of the kind of assembly-line pop that would rear its head later in the decade, namely in the form of Britney Spears. And, though not as interesting as Dion's francophone work, it's nonetheless an important point in her career trajectory. Depending on your feelings for Dion, this is the album to credit, or blame, for what's happened since. --Kieran Grant Product description Celine Dion ~ Unison
