Details: Product Description Vivaldi Amazon.ca Besides hundreds of concertos and 80 operas, Vivaldi wrote a considerable amount of church music, including two settings of the Gloria, both in D. The second, RV589, is generally the best known, and is the one featured on this recording. Though its predecessor, RV588, contains some equally fine writing, and the two are available together with the Beatus Vir on an excellent Double Decca anthology. Jeremy Summerly has long specialised in early choral music, and the Schola Cantorum, Oxford University's longest running chamber choir, responds with singing of the uttermost clarity, the acoustic of St. Peter's Church, Hale, providing a perfectly apposite setting. The result is certainly a recording to stand beside Hyperion's series of Vivaldi's complete sacred music. Both the Gloria and the Beatus Vir are on a grand scale, allowing the composer to produce settings of great coherence and formal elegance, whilst giving free reign to his unparalleled gifts of melodic invention. The composer always wrote particularly well for soprano voice, and here Anna Crookes, Jayne Whitaker and Carys-Anne Lane offer performances such beauty as make this a very fine addition to the Vivaldi catalogue indeed. --Gary S.
