Details: Amazon.ca Michael Flatley is an extraordinary Irish-American step dancer with a gift for choreography and showmanship, and literally the fastest feet in the world. After choreographing the world-famous Riverdance in 1994 and performing to huge acclaim as that show's intermission act in the Eurovision Song Contest, Flatley toured the world with his own original Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames, and Celtic Tiger shows beginning in 1996. In March 2010, Flatley triumphantly returned to the O2 Arena in Dublin, "where it all began," with this elaborate Lord of the Dance production. The film begins with a few minutes of commentary by Flatley, followed by the live Dublin show presented in 3-D. The show is beautifully filmed and is a succession of hard-shoe and soft-shoe step dances, set dances, solo dances, and ceilidh dances. There are large ensemble pieces; call-and-response line numbers; solo and couple dances featuring Flatley, Tom Cunningham, Bernadette Flynn, and Ciara Sexton; an excellent flute solo by Flatley; and lots of extraordinary fiddle playing by Giada Costenero and Valerie Gleeson. In this production, the straight arms held firmly at one's side that were so popular in Riverdance are starkly contrasted with highly expressive arm movements and more fluid modern dances that convey deep emotion. Much more than just a dance show with elaborate costumes, Lord of the Dance is a multimedia retelling of the story of good versus evil through Irish folklore. The good Lord of the Dance battles the evil Lord Don Dorcha for the planet Ireland, getting some help from a little spirit and struggling to choose between the evil temptress Morrighan and the Irish lass Saoirse. The battles are fierce, seductive, and emotionally charged, and are all waged with amazing footwork and incredible music. --Tami Horiuchi
