Details: Amazon.ca Toma Kamijo, the hapless hero of the fantasy-adventure A Certain Magical Index (2008), lives in Academy City, where more than 2 million kids are trained to use their psi powers. Toma has no psychic abilities, but his right hand is an "imagine breaker" that nullifies any abnormal or magical power he comes in contact with. His ordinary student life is interrupted by the appearance of Sister Index, who has committed more than 100,000 grimoires (magical textbooks) to memory. The Church of the Necessary Evil, a powerful magic organization, both fears and covets the knowledge those books contain. Having taken Index in, Toma tries to protect her from two sorcerers who are seeking to erase her memory. A magical feather somehow erases all of Toma's memories, forcing him to ad-lib daily life. A Certain Magical Index combines elements of the magical girl and harem comedy genres, but the story meanders as aimlessly as one of Index's explanations. Toma defeats an evil alchemist, then takes on an extremely powerful esper and a few of her many clones, who were created in an illicit military experiment. The filmmakers don't seem to know what's actually going on, and the viewer must go along for the ride with an agreeable cast of characters. Practicing Catholics may find some of the religious references offensive: Index's name is short for Index Librorum Prohibitorum, the list of books forbidden by the Church; her robe is supposedly a replica of the Shroud of Turin. It's meant to be harmless fun, but Magical Index would be more entertaining if it had a coherent plot. (Rated TV 14: violence, violence against women, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use, potentially offensive religious imagery) --Charles Solomon (1. Academy City, 2. Innocentius, King of Witch Hunting, 3.
