Details: Amazon.ca One of the more curious reality series to surface in recent memory (and that says a lot), Steven Seagal: Lawman follows the '80s action hero in the course of his second career as reserve deputy sheriff in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Those expecting to see Seagal busting bad guys as he does in his movies may be sorely disappointed--for the most part, Seagal and his team arrive after the crime has occurred, leaving him to glare imposingly at suspect and victim alike. In fact, the first season's action "high point" is a hostage rescue demonstration executed by Seagal and the SWAT team at a police picnic ("Narc Force"). To be fair, there are some gritty moments, including several gunshot and assault victims, an undercover drug sting, and even several foot chases ("Medicine Man"), but Seagal's carriage and demeanor--he desperately wants to be taken seriously as a law enforcement officer, yet cannot distance himself from his cool and lethal screen persona--reduces every scenario to camp. Even worse are situations clearly designed for the benefit of the camera, like a visit to a children's cancer ward that inspires an impromptu musical performance by Seagal ("Too Young to Die") and some light humor involving Seagal's newly adopted guard dogs ("Killer Canines"), as well as uproarious visual effects that attempt to illustrate Seagal's ability at spotting suspected evildoers. For those who've hung with Seagal's career throughout its peaks and valleys, Lawman may prove to be an entertaining supplement to his feature films; all others may find it high camp, at best. The two-disc set includes some 30 minutes of deleted scenes, none of which add to or detract from the series in any way. --Paul Gaita
