Funkytown is a Canadian film written by Steve Galluccio and directed by Daniel Roby. The story takes place in Montreal during the height of the disco era and follows the life of several people who are living the life or want a piece of it. Patrick Huard (Bon Cop/Bad Cop, Starbuck) plays Bastien Lavallee a radio personality, tv show host and married man/father who lives and breathes the sex drugs and disco of 1976. Justin Chatwin (Shameless) is Tino DeiFiori a young Italian working in the family restaurant who battles with homosexuality while dating his girlfriend and a traditional conservative mother. Paul Doucet (Unite 9) is Jonathan Aaronson a gay fashionista and trendsetter who regarded a celebrity in Montreal's disco community. Sarah Mutch (Supernatural) is Adriana a model looking to break into the industry as a singer/tv personality and does who and whatever it takes to achieve her goal and Raymond Bouchard (Mauvais Karma) is Gilles Lefebvre an arrogant record producer who's looking to cash out on the next best seller. The center hub for it all is the "The Starlight" run by Gilles' humble son Daniel played by Francois Letourneau (Quebec-Montreal) who wants to make an honest living and to get away from his father. "The Starlight" is based on the real life Limelight Discotheque which was among North America's most popular discos that flocked celebrities to its doorstep. Each character intertwines with each other and takes you deep into their personal lives: does Tino choose happiness or pride? Will Gilles strike it rich or loose his shirt? Does Bastien choose Adriana or his family? It's all the lights, the sounds and the energy that fueled the pop culture of the late 70's/early 80's that make Funkytown a must have for the film lover's collection.
