Amazon.ca Easily the most accomplished of Moist's first three discs, Mercedes 5 and Dime sees the band escape the post-grunge torpor of their Creature album to create a much wider palette of sounds and moods. The single "Breathe" is emblematic of this shift in sensibility. While it's not a million miles away from early hard-rock Moist hits like "Silver," it's definitely delivered with a lighter touch. Even the most straightforward rock tracks on Mercedes 5 and Dime have some interesting new curves. Though Mark Makowy's guitar squeals are still prominent in the mix, "Liberation" and "Mike Hammer" are driven more by keyboardist Kevin Young, whose distinctive playing recalls Mike Garson's inventive contributions to David Bowie's albums of the early '70s. And though the quiet verse/loud chorus tactic is still Moist's usual plan of attack, the songwriting here boasts a new care and delicacy. "Tonight" is a sturdy folk-rock ballad that builds a creepy kind of momentum as singer David Usher murmurs, "I wonder where you are tonight," over colorful keyboard fills. The soft guitars and hand percussion on "Place" create a similarly serene setting for Usher's vocals, which can often be grating and melodramatic but have an appealing intimacy when he's not going over the top. Like the rest of Moist, Usher seems to have discovered how much richer the band's music can be when he gives it room to breathe. --Jason Anderson
