Details: Amazon.ca The Law of the Pig is the very first feature film by Érik Canuel, a director who trained in the world of advertising, music videos and television, working on the popular Fortier series, among others. His comic and twisted whodunit exudes a flavor of Fargo, the Cohen brothers, the declared influence of Canuel and screenwriter Joanne Arseneau. Isabel Richer was nominated for the Jutra for Best Actress for her portrayal of Stéphane, a young woman who manages a pigsty not far from the American border. Addicted to video poker, she hopes to get rid of her gambling debts by ripping off two schemers (Sylvain Martel and Jean-Nicolas Verreault) who are growing marijuana on her property. He takes it badly, and the rest of his life is spent lying to some and running away from others, while trying to protect his pregnant younger sister (Catherine Trudeau), a surrogate mother. We feel in The Law of the Pig that Érik Canuel is a man to explore new avenues, even if it means confusing moviegoers. Her restless camera leans to one side or the other as if always seeking a new perspective. The characters wander briskly from realism to caricature. Particularly tasty, Marie Brassard and Stéphane Demers play a couple of suburbanites who seem straight out of the 1940s! In an atmosphere imbued with violence and strangeness, The Law of the Pig mourns, not without humor, the children abandoned by fate to the cruelty of the greatest. --Julie Sergent
