Details: Amazon.ca A true classic of Quebec popular culture, Les Belles Histoires des pays d'en haut, since their original publication in Claude-Henri Grignon's novel in 1933, have inspired many creators. Having given birth to a radio soap opera and three cinematographic adaptations, it is nevertheless perhaps on television that these Belles Histoires knew how to find the most echo. In the village of Ste-Adèle, in the Laurentians, in 1890, in full colonization of northern Quebec, the mayor Séraphin Poudrier (Jean-Pierre Masson), forcibly marries the beautiful Donalda (Andrée Champagne) yet in love with the young and vigorous Alexis (Gabriel Gascon). It is around this romantic canvas that the Belles Histoires told the daily life of the village and gave birth to endearing and now mythical characters: the priest Labelle (Paul Desmarteaux), the father Ovide (Pierre Daigneault) and of course Séraphin, the 'miser. Broadcast from 1957 to 1970, the 495 episodes of the series certainly marked the collective unconscious of Quebec more than others. A selection of thirty-nine episodes (in color and in black and white) is now offered in two boxes of five DVDs each. The first offers some 75 minutes of previously unseen scenes grouped under the title Les Péchéscapitals and the second 90 minutes, entitled Humor, love and rendezvous. A great opportunity to reconnect with memories or learn a little more about one of the pillars of the Quebec psyche. --Helen Faradji
