Details: Amazon.ca Summer 1991: originally from Pennsylvania and totally unknown, a young singer triumphs at the Montreux festival. His first record for Blue Note also creates the event, the Jazz Academy awarding him its prestigious Billie Holiday Prize. That Rachelle Ferrell has since abandoned jazz seems all the more regrettable as this famous concert in Montreux appears today. The repertoire remains substantially the same as that of her first Blue Note recording, but the versions she gives us are certainly superior. On stage, Rachelle is then a voice with an exceptional range, a voice full of soul and feeling. Totally liberated, allowing herself amazing octave leaps, the singer is enthusiastic. Two tracks recorded in 1997 needlessly complete this programme. Rachelle sings them in French (!), without ever really managing to rise to her best level. -- Stone of Chocqueuse
