Details: Product Description From M. Night Shyamalan, the writer/director of THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE, comes the story of the Hess family in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who wake up one morning to find a 500-foot crop circle in their backyard. Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) and his family are told extraterrestrials are responsible for the sign in their field. They watch, with growing dread, the news of crop circles being found all over the world. SIGNS is the emotional story of one family on one farm as they encounter the terrifying last moments of life as the world is being invaded. "It's easy for a filmmaker to blow up the world -- but what Shyamalan does is much riskier. He tries to blow our minds. I was engaged by every inch of SIGNS." - Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper. Amazon.ca Supernatural, anxiety, suspense, and childhood, set against the backdrop of middle America: in Signs, M. Night Shyamalan uses the simple but effective ingredients that made his previous films, The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, successful. But here, Bruce Willis has been replaced by Mel Gibson. Graham Hess, a former pastor, lives on his farm in Pennsylvania with his two children and his brother. Since his wife's death in a car accident, he has lost his faith. When he discovers that the gigantic symbol traced into his own field has also appeared in every corner of the planet, he is forced to confront his own convictions and beliefs. The references to Hitchcock are plentiful, but Signs lacks the stature of a work by the master of suspense. For even though M. Night Shyamalan knows how to pace his surprises, Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix are understated and convincing, and the film raises philosophical questions about the role of religion, Signs suffers from suspense created by cheap jump scares and a finale that flirts a little too much with melodrama. Certainly, it is as effective as following a recipe, but one cannot help but regret the lack of finesse and originality in the result. --Helen Faradji
