Details: Amazon.ca Jazz, soul, rock 'n' roll, country, rhythm 'n' blues, music hall: Ray Charles touched on almost every musical style, and often ahead of his time. Since we have to choose, this compilation focuses primarily on the rhythm 'n' blues period of "The Genius." It was the era of his greatest classics like "What'd I Say," a rock track as electrifying and edgy as Elvis's first hits at Sun. With this song, he can boast of having written one of the most famous riffs in rock history, alongside those of "Satisfaction" and "Smoke On The Water." Ray Charles' stroke of genius was to divert the fervor, emotional charge, and swing of gospel toward secular subjects (cf. "I Got A Woman" or "Hallelujah I Love Her So"). Later, after leaving Atlantic, he achieved success mainly with sentimental ballads like the very famous "Georgia On My Mind" by Hoagy Carmichael. His performances at the time, warm and velvety, drew admiration from Frank Sinatra, among other rivals. --Hubert Deshouse
