Author: Walsh, Bob
Release Date: 22-11-2006
Details: Amazon.ca Much more inspired than Unforgettable Songs, the well-known cover album that preceded it, Blues brings Bob Walsh back to what he does best: sing heartbreaking tunes with frankness and intensity. The bluesman has judiciously selected 14 tracks that wonderfully synthesize his career: there are original compositions ("Snow Falling Gray Day"), traditional tunes ("House of the Rising Sun"), popular covers ("Hit the Road Jack") or more obscure ("Buzzard Luck"). Walsh also alternates between rich and spare orchestrations, not hesitating to reconnect with a string quartet or call on a brass section. The musician thus achieves a very nice balance and delivers an album as dynamic as it is warm, which leaves no room for boredom. The performances are flawless: not only is Walsh all vocals, but his orchestra, which includes harmonica player Guy Bélanger and bassist Jean Cyr, is also on fire! The contributions of the many guests give each track a unique character: Steve Hill, Gilles Sioui and, above all, Jeff Healey shine on guitars, while Dawn Tyler Watson and Kim Richardson excel on backing vocals. This is an opus that will reconcile fans of early Walsh and those who are interested in its more commercial side. To consume without reserve! --Nicolas Houle
