Details: Grosse Boîte is reissuing Brun, which the former "Reverend" (referring more to his old stage name than any obscure religious past) had independently released last May. In Bernard's own words, the album could be described as "urban gospel draped in an old-school country-blues sauce," or, in our own words, "the most touching thing we’ve heard in a long time." The singer-songwriter presents a dark (or brown?) portrait of Montreal's East End, contrasting it with colorful characters. But Brun also offers moments of introspection, such as on "Acapulco" or "La question à 100 piasses," the latter of which was awarded the SOCAN Echo Songwriting Prize in October 2009. And while we’re on the subject of awards, it’s worth mentioning that Bernard "swept the board," as Bande à part put it during the 2009 Festival de la chanson de Petite-Vallée, by winning 6 of the 10 awards offered. Brown is beautiful.
