Several months before the show's launch in Quebec in February 2004, the album bringing together 15 of the 35 songs performed on stage was released. Love, desire, and jealousy are conveyed through warm music and inspired lyrics in the work of Gray, a songwriter who has provided hits for Patrick Bruel, Didier Barbelivien, and Johnny Hallyday. Under the direction of Guy St-Onge, the orchestra of over 40 musicians sometimes features languid strings weeping for lost love, and at other times, passionate flamenco. Jean-François Breau, who played Gringoire in Notre-Dame de Paris, lends his confident and sensual voice to the character of Don Juan. As for the beautiful Maria, who will fall under his spell, the crystalline voice of Marie-Ève Janvier perfectly captures her youthful happiness in love. While the casting is particularly successful in the case of these lovebirds whose voices blend admirably on the hit "Changer," other performances sometimes lack zest. However, we must highlight the happy participation of Chico Castillo, who sings an exhilarating gypsy piece of his own composition ("Vivir"), as well as the presence of Claude Léveillée (Don Luis), whose thin voice suits his role as a father disappointed by his son's habits. For while this Don Juan has new inflections, he remains as indomitable as ever. And that is exactly why we love him. --Julie Sergent
