Once again surrounded by director Réjean Bouchard and composer Gilles Bélanger, Chloé Sainte-Marie offers with candor, in her applied little girl's voice, the words of others, singing in French, English and Innu skilfully structured texts. The country-folk flavored music, bewitchingly simple, leaves plenty of room for verses by poets Patrice Desbiens and Bruno Roy and Gilles Carle. The title track, signed by the immortal Gaston Miron, is a pure marvel, and the lyrics in the Montagnais language by Philippe McKenzie transport us to an elsewhere full of refinement and emotion. The great ladies of folk McGarrigle also contribute to the music ("Petite Annonce amour"); even Pierre Flynn plays the Hammond organ on "Mishapan Nitassinan". Make no mistake about it: beneath its light exterior, Je marche à toi is beautiful and serious, strewn with dazzling images. The interpreter has managed the feat of bringing together big names without ever drowning his own personality. It's called grace. --Diane John
