After touring the province in search of candidates to train as the stars of tomorrow, ''Star Académie'' presented their finds on February 16. These fourteen finalists have entered the Academy to learn the tricks of the show business trade. Amazon.ca Nearly three million viewers followed the weekly Star Académie galas, an unprecedented phenomenon in Quebec. More than 500,000 fans purchased the album carefully prepared by the competition's 14 finalists, who generally focused on well-crafted pop, enhanced with a few rock or techno touches. The production is handled mostly by Antoine Sicotte, the creative half of the duo Sky, and by Éric Lapointe’s guitarist, Stéphane Dufour, who gives Annie a rather muscular version of Michel Sardou's "Je vais t'aimer." The original compositions by Stéphane Laporte are inspired – including "Je vais changer le monde," a lovely anthem for peace brilliantly interpreted by Jean-François – but one of the merits of this album is also that it succeeds in updating somewhat forgotten songs. While some versions are very successful ("Quelle Belle Vie" by Gilles Bélanger, revisited by Dave; "Danser danser" by Nanette Workman, covered by Émily; and, above all, "Tout petit la planète" by Plastik Bertrand, enhanced by Élyse's crystalline voice), others prove less memorable (the version of Harmonium's "Un musicien parmi tant d'autres" is a missed opportunity). This first album in the series does not compete in terms of originality, but provides the great joy of discovering 14 talents who have carved out a choice place in the hearts of Quebecers… --Frédéric Boudreault
