Details: Now firmly entrenched as an important part of the television landscape, the series began to experiment a bit and to delve even more deeply into the cast of characters, most notably that of Christine Cagney culminating with Sharon’s second Emmy ® award-winning performance in the two-part episode Turn, Turn, Turn (Disc 6) which also won the Scott Newman Award. There were some insights into Isbecki as well (episodes: Schedule One (Disc 1), Sorry, Right Number – (Disc 1), the Lacey household (Ahead Of The Game (Disc 4), Easy Does It (Disc 4), Right To Remain Silent (Disc 5), Special Treatment – (Disc 5), a flirtation with comedy (To Sir With Love – (Disc 4)) complete with its homage to Lucy and Ethel. It was a season about a series “becoming comfortable in its own skin.” Kathy Bates made her Cagney & Lacey appearance (Revenge – (Disc 3) a few years before her Oscar ® winning* performance in the motion picture Misery; Emmy ® award winner Lois Nettleton can be seen in this season as well (Divine Courier-(Disc 5). The top episodes for the season included Disenfranchised (Disc 1), a commentary on what little voice the little voices of children have in society, Right To Remain Silent (Disc 5), with a surprising slant on a sentimental heroine, and Cost Of Living (Disc 3) which brings the Mansfield “relationship” with Cagney to a boil as well as a major pot-stirrer with her one-time lover David Keeler. Chris’ relationship with her father comes to a head as well in this episode. To Sir With Love (Disc 4) is the sometime favorite episode of both Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless. The Kitchen scene alone gives one a peak into what might have been had I been successful in my one time “pitch” to have Cagney & Lacey be a comedy with drama instead of the other way round. Turn, Turn, Turn Parts I and II (Disc 6) … a multiple award winner for performances, writing, directing and content with special kudos to writers Georgia Jeffries, Jonathan Estrin, Shelley List & director Sharron Miller.
