Details: Amazon.ca A small primary school lost in the depths of Auvergne; one of these unique classes where all the children from the same village rub shoulders, from kindergarten to CM2; a teacher whose attention and patience are matched only by his serenity and passion for teaching... These are the main ingredients of this documentary film by Nicolas Philibert, To be and to Have. To the rhythm of the seasons (the sumptuous landscapes, sometimes snow-covered, sometimes spring-like, wonderfully symbolize the passage of time) and the work in the fields (in a few interludes the rigors of the life of farmers are described there), the director followed step by step and filmed for six months the thirteen students of Mr. Lopez, exploring in turn their doubts, their difficulties, their sorrows and their enthusiasm in the face of learning traditional subjects but above all the true values of life: patience, perseverance, humility, a taste for effort, mutual aid or even respect for others and the resolution of conflicts... Over the sketches that illustrate the daily life of these children, within the school itself as in that of the family circle, explosions of joy and giggles, stemming from the children's natural humor, alternate with a few passages of extreme emotion, such as that of the pupil painfully confiding in his teacher about his father's serious illness. In the end, we very quickly fall in love with these little ones as with this splendid, fresh and invigorating film, as enriching as it is entertaining, which will make many people regret the happy moments of intimacy and carelessness of primary school. --Frederic Thorens
