Details: Amazon.ca A broke director (Stéphane Demers), who is shooting a documentary on unemployment, shamelessly exploits the misfortunes of his roommate (Paul Ahmarani), an engineer looking for a job. This is the ingenious starting point of The Left Half of the Fridge, Philippe Falardeau's first feature film. This very low-budget fiction film disguised as a mockumentary is a reflection on friendship, unemployment, pretense and Quebec society. Shot with friends, with a small crew, and on digital video, this crafty little comedy, whose humor and social concerns sometimes evoke Roger and Me, has the qualities and faults of an extraordinary film, which is situated somewhere part between the television report and the student prank. In terms of qualities, we must note an undeniable freshness, a real social conscience and a devastating humor. Side defects, we regret a certain amateurism and some lengths. There remains the pleasure of discovering a small UFO which has rallied a large part of the public and critics, and which has pleased the whole community so much that it has obtained a Genie prize and a Jutra prize. --Georges Privet
