Mr. Brochu, "The Boss", runs his gas station as best he can, despite the repeated thefts and hold-ups, competition from the self-serve stations around the corner - and his strained relationship with his two eldest sons, who want more out of life than running the Champlain service station. Through the minor tragedies of the Boss's life, we meet the locals who hang around the gas station, trading stories and having a good laugh....

Second feature film written and directed by Louis Bélanger, it also makes its author one of the outstanding filmmakers of the Quebec cinematographic landscape. In 1989, the world throbbed under the effect of socio-political upheavals. Difficult then for Mr Brochu, alias the Boss, to continue to make his gas bar live in the same way, with his regulars and his daily routine. Especially since Parkinson's undermines him and his two eldest sons dream of photography and the blues. Without misery and inspired by his own life, Bélanger depicts the effects of emerging globalization and its demand for performance on small businesses, through the daily life of the Brochu family. Extremely touching, he also breathes remarkable authenticity and sincerity into his film, in particular thanks to Serge Thériault (the Boss), winner of a Jutra for his performance. Very far from the clichés of the pink man or the macho, Bélanger paints a tender portrait of men who are more real than life, sensitive and virile at the same time. Deep in its simplicity, poetic and serious, Gaz Bar Blues shakes up as much as it moves. –Helen Faradji Special Features
