Details: Amazon.ca Based on the Punch Tales of ex-prisoner and poet Léo Lévesque, Histoire de pen is Michel Jetté's second foray into a dark and violent universe. After having visited that of the bikers in the very noticed Hochelaga, the Quebec director tackles here the high security penitentiaries. Falling into crime by chance and out of love, 19-year-old Claude (Emmanuel Auger) commits irreparable harm and is sent, in the midst of a crisis, to a maximum security prison. He will quickly become the plaything of two clan chiefs who fight over the territory with great blows of humiliation and terror. In this world of flayed alive where everyone tries to gain a dignity lost in advance, Michel Jetté paints the portrait of several disarming characters, interpreted by magnificent actors, Dominic Darceuil and Paul Dion in mind. And even if all the imaginable clichés of life “inside” are reviewed and certain directing effects sometimes gratuitously stylize violence, Histoire de pen has the merit of offering a poetic vision of incarceration, leaving room for a few almost surreal mental escapes. From this very hard prison fable, we will retain rich and powerful dialogues and absolute honesty on the part of a director who would gain a lot from purifying his subject. --Helen Faradji
