Details: Amazon.ca More than 15 years after its release, The Decline of the American Empire, by Denys Arcand, is still the greatest international success of Quebec cinema. A classic. Presented at the Cannes Film Festival in the spring of 1986, The Decline… attracted an immediate craze. The French public ran to see this “Canadian comedy” in which a handful of university professors talk a little heart and a lot of ass, during a weekend in the countryside that ends worse than it started. Le Déclin…, which earned an Oscar nomination, two awards at the Toronto Film Festival and nine Genie awards, has had an exceptional career. Its theatrical success made people forget that it was originally a low-budget film (what Americans call a “talking heads movie”) and a gritty, pessimistic comedy. Indeed, if Denys Arcand's script draws colorful characters and is full of tasty dialogues, the filmmaker's criticism of the Quebec bourgeoisie, bathed in comfort and indifference, is scathing. A fine moralist and gifted entertainer, Arcand is also an excellent director of actors, who here gives superb roles to Dominique Michel, Dorothée Berryman, Louise Portal, Geneviève Rioux, Rémy Girard, Pierre Curzi, Yves Jacques and Gabriel Arcand. --Eric Fourlanty
