Charbonniers De L'Enfer / A Cappella Songs - CD (Used)
Details: Amazon.ca Flamboyant representatives of traditional Quebec music, the Charbonniers de l'enfer have given themselves a very simple mission: to reproduce original songs from the land, without the slightest instrument, except a hint of foot rhythm (the tapping the foot), violin or jew's harp. A mandate which, come to think of it, is not easy. How, indeed, to sustain the listener's attention and give a new vision of this repertoire in such a stripped-down form? The five friends, including the storyteller Michel Faubert and Michel Bordeleau, from La Bottine Souriante, nevertheless succeed brilliantly on this first album, Chansons a cappella. Competing in inventiveness and skill, they always manage to capture the spirit of the pieces they appropriate. Sometimes in unison, sometimes with remarkable harmonies, they brilliantly ring out these retro rhymes and subtly vibrate these centuries-old melodies. When you hear them bite into words and syllables as if they were just one person, it's like the devil himself has come to inhabit them, just to make sure that the charcoal burners warm good hell! To listen to while tapping your foot and tasting the funny anecdotes told in the booklet. --Nicolas Houle
