Michel Rivard / Cursed Happiness - CD (Used)
Author: Rivard, Michel
Release Date: 01-01-2007
Details: Amazon.ca Maudit bonheur, Michel Rivard's eighth album, crowns more than 25 years of a fruitful and irreproachable career. After having sung about Montreal and its neighborhoods, after describing the pangs of love and the malaise of a disappointed generation, Rivard now writes increasingly personal short stories. Timeless and thoughtful, Maudit bonheur is a continuation of his previous album. Produced in collaboration with guitarist Rick Haworth, an accomplice of the great “Flybin String Ensemble” for several years, Maudit bonheur brings together faithful like Mario Légaré on bass and Dominic Messier on drums. The vocals of the McGarrigle sisters add to the folk vibe of the set. If Rivard takes over Jacques Brel's “Madeleine”, it is in his own way, melodious and serene. However, the album lacks a bit of bite. The title track would have gained in impact if the music had been darker. But Rivard chose the light, even for the more serious texts, like “Rue Sanschagrin” and “My sad and poor heart”, songs with a country flavor. The torments are rare, and even if he curses it sometimes, the singer apparently chose happiness. --Diane John
