Details: Amazon.ca The 80s saw the emergence of a new Paul Piché. Without the beard, he becomes more of a singer than a songwriter, is interested in rock and pop, and learns to better balance art and political commitment. On the way to the fires represents the peak of this important transition. Poetry and music cohabit wonderfully to form a balanced album, refined without being fixed, thoughtful without being heavy. Piché opens with the ecological lament "J'appelle", then turns contemplative ("Étrange"), amorous ("Sur ma peau", "Car je t'aime") or nostalgic ("L'École des trois buttons"). Along the way, he delivers some of his most beautiful songs, in particular "Le Temps d'aimer", a remarkable hymn to childhood, the touching "I bequeath to the sea" and "Un château de sable", where he skillfully confides his fears concerning the erosion of the French language: "And the ink of the words drowns on my page / When I try to write in their wise language / On the shore there is only one shipwreck/And a key eroded by the tide". The synthetic instrumentation has not always aged well, but it cannot eclipse the great qualities of this album, perhaps the best that Piché has recorded. --Nicolas Houle Product Description Piché, Paul
