Everything is normal

Details: Amazon.ca Richard Pelland, protege of singer Boom Desjardins, was treated to ideal conditions to record Tout est normal, a folk-sounding debut pop album. Hosted by the Boombox/DKDD label, the singer-songwriter from Joliette had a budget giving him access to careful production and, above all, to a team of accomplished musicians, including drummer Pierre Hébert (October ), accordionist Michel Hinton (Beau Dommage) and a string section including violist Ligia Paquin. If his hoarse voice, not always assured, is close to that of the leader of La Chicane, Pelland nevertheless has his own musical identity. It is true that with his penchant for country and rock colors, the artist cannot claim to renew Quebec song – yet he handles the pen quite well and knows how to find melodies that stick to his aesthetic choices. Also, despite some less convincing pieces like "Le Roi du guess", with a rather heavy structure, or "Ut", which is more of a stylistic exercise, Pelland manages to make us penetrate into his universe where torments and questions are served with a good dose of "toé", "ben" and "moé". Everything is normal may not reinvent the wheel, but he knows how to spin it. --Nicolas Houle
