Details: Amazon.ca IAM, the return. The godfathers of French rap have just given birth to their fifth album, enriched by the diverse experiences of each other. This is an album of dizzying richness, containing no less than 17 tracks, often heavier (“I have the sad verb, the gray feather…”) and more alarmist than usual. But the three go in multiple directions, delivering their flow at an industrial pace, breathtaking. This is why we can speak of a rich disc; you have to come back to it, dive into it again. Because it is not an album of hits, even if it contains "Noble Art", the single, sung with two of the most powerful MCs of US hip-hop: Method Man and Redman. Indeed, a real funky bomb, this hit does not at all reflect the color of a rather dark album with a few touches of electro. In six years of intense cogitation, the now legendary trio from La Canebière has had time to accumulate resentments and translate them into rhymes, to rehash the past and formulate their bitterness (Le Fruit de la rage, "J could have put more string in my writings but the heart commands the hand"). We are far from the antics of Mia ("I injected meaning into my verses... some nerve into my terms") and metaphorical fables previous opuses. Here, like Akhenaten's latest albums Sol Invictus and Black Album, the tone is dark and crude stories of a sinister reality (the city, exclusion…) that never ceases to haunt the minds of the three rappers. Always so proud, they have never claimed so much the quality (superiority?) and the relevance of their clan ("The best thing is that you make room, hip-hop releases its thinnest blades again..." ), reconnecting with one of the stereotypes of rap, and claiming determination in all respects, making hope their main strength. Bruno Coulais himself, even if he does not produce all the songs, breathes new life into the sound so characteristic of the group: cinematic atmospheres and melancholic loops. --Luc Demont
