Details: Product Description No Newcomer to the Music Scene, Hip Hop Purist Buck 65 Has Worked with the Beastie Boys and Comes Recommended by Radiohead and Aphex Twin. Amazon.ca To really understand Buck 65's Square you need to know exactly what circles this ambitious Canadian MC-producer moves in. An affiliate of Anticon--the Californian crew of underground B-boys that toy with absurdist poetry and avant-garde musical form in their quest to twist hip-hop into something strange and new--Buck has long stalked the margins of the genre, his abstract rhyming and experimental turntable skills a challenging response to hip-hop conformity. He's the first of this community to sign to a major label--but this sprawling record, split into four movements that total up to an hour, makes it abundantly clear he's not planning on dumbing down to score commercial success. Square One opens with the announcement that "the hippies of today will be the squares of tomorrow", mutating from a deft turntablist scratch-down into a sensitive poetry reading accompanied by vintage organ riff and jazzy percussion, and proceeds through finger-picked Latin acoustic guitar laments and bass-heavy electronica segments, powered by a mix of inspiration and impatience. Buck is a versatile rapper: one moment he's baring his soul, the next he's compiling dizzying lists of his favorite foods: "french-fries, falafaels, waffles and griddle-cakes". Hip-hop purists may be turned off, but for anyone that's been charmed by the innovation of DJ Shadow or the mind-bending rhyming of Kool Keith and wants to dig deeper into hip-hop's underground, Square counts as essential. --Louis Pattison
