Details: Amazon.ca New version of the cult fantasy film Ringu, by Japanese Hideo Nakata, The Ring, directed by Gore Verbinski, sucks us into a particularly harrowing suspense. A mysterious videotape causes the death, seven days later, of whoever watches it. Reality or urban legend? This is what Rachel Keller, journalist, will try to discover when her niece dies in more than strange circumstances and she will be forced to engage herself in this race against death. The Ring manages to maintain a stressful tension until its denouement in the form of a very deft trompe-l'oeil. Verbinski constantly manipulates the viewer's expectations through an adequate soundtrack and the insertion of some rather disturbing shock scenes, causing much more jumps than Nakata's Ringu, with its very sober structure. Despite the greenish lighting that constantly recalls the aesthetic of The Sixth Sense, and despite Naomi Watts' (noted in Mulholland Drive) doll-like looks, more or less believable, The Ring is the kind of film to watch very late in the at night, perfect for playing scare. --Helen Faradji
