Jazz side: Live at the Lion d'Or

Details: Amazon.ca Sylvain Lelièvre has always flirted with jazz. Before dying, he devoted an entire album to it. Recorded at the Lion d'Or, in Montreal, in 2001, Versant jazz is a pure gift offered by the veteran of elegant rhyme to his fans and to jazz lovers. On this disc, the singer resumes his successes by infusing them with renewed vigor. “Marie-Hélène” lends itself particularly well to the genre. We also rediscover the funny “Le coup du telephone”, and we like to hear a beautiful new one, “Abraham et papa”. Each piece is presented by a Lelièvre with a fine sense of humor and a skillful pianist. He is surrounded by big names, the brass section, in particular, sets the tone, dominated by the virtuoso saxophonist Richard Beaudet. The sextet allows itself more free flights in the instrumental pieces. An intelligent album of great refinement. -- Diana John
