Details: Amazon.ca The Walt Disney studios have accustomed us, in recent years, to rather sweet and sometimes even frankly cutesy productions. But it is clear that the animated film Lilo and Stitch changes the portrait and seriously makes you want to dive back into childhood. On the planet Turo, an evil scientist is condemned for having created a monster by doing genetic manipulation. The creature, a sort of four-armed winged koala programmed to destroy, flees and lands on planet Earth, Hawaii. There, she will be adopted by a lonely little girl with an energetic character, a fan of Elvis Presley, who will make her understand the meaning of the word family. With its sassy, disastrous, and sometimes even villainous heroes, Lilo & Stitch avoids fooling kids and, in doing so, succeeds where many cartoons stumble. Swarming with “adult” references to Godzilla, Men in Black, Alien or even Baywatch, this comedy halfway between adventure story and science fiction is terribly original and dynamic. The film also benefits from magnificent images, thanks to an almost exclusive use (apart from a few computer-generated images) of watercolors. Sometimes moving, often very funny, Lilo and Stitch has, finally, a rare and quite respectable quality: irreverence. --Helen Faradji
