Details: Amazon.ca When Children Of Bodom released Something Wild, their debut album, in 1998, many smirks were heard: black metal with heavy metal sauce (or vice versa), it couldn't work! Only then, the compositions were so hard-hitting and the guitarist Alexi Laiho, its leader, was so gifted that Something Wild was a great success, just like Hatebreeder in 1999. Unfortunately, Follow The Reaper turns out to be very much behind its two eminent predecessors, a little as if Alexi, who has many other opportunities to cultivate his blackness by lending a hand to various groups that are clearly more black, both musically and ideologically (notably Impaled Nazarene), had wanted to make Children Of Bodom more accessible. Admittedly, it's not yet Sinergy, his girlfriend's combo in which he also plays, but the influence of atmospheric black has strongly regressed in favor of an undeniably less dark melodic speed. This does not detract from Alexi's talent, which is expressed differently here, but the firepower of Children Of Bodom is considerably reduced. --Herve SK Guegano
