Details: Exploding back into the cultural limelight, MIA returns this summer with her third full length release, MAYA, the follow-up to her Canadian Gold selling sophomore album, KALA and the explosive, pioneering debut, Arular. Working with Kala alum Blaqstarr, Switch, and Diplo (who has been part of both previous MIA discs) along with Rusko, the later says of /\/\ /\ Y /\ “If you're an MIA fan and you buy a new MIA record, you want to hear something you've never heard before. This record gives you that." Rusko, current reigning champ of the dubstep scene, has been called "one of the most promising producers of his generation" by DJ Magazine. In addition, the album also features production from NEET Records recording artist, Sleigh Bells. The Oscar and Grammy nominated MIA is never one to turn away from controversy, evidenced by her Born Free video. Directed by Romain Gavras (The Last Shadow Puppets, Justice and DJ Mehdi), it features government troops rounding up and then brutally killing red-headed children. Banned almost immediately from youtube, it has garnered over 8 million hits from various sites across the web. Artist And Album Information If you read a lot about new music on the Web, odds are pretty good that, at some point between the September 2004 release of "Galang" and the March 2005 release of Arular, you were struck with the urge to turn your computer off or maybe even heave it out of a nearby window. If you don't read a lot about new music on the Web, the preceding sentence indicates how bewildering and draining the chatter about MIA became. Arular, MIA's first album, leaked well before its official release, allowing journalists and downloaders plenty of time to dissect it and bat ideas back and forth -- taking in the sounds, words, and absolutely all of the context -- before average music fans were able to develop their own opinions. Maya Arulpragasam spent the early years of her life in a number of places. She moved from London, England, to her parents' native Sri Lanka at the age of six months, only to relocate to Madras, India. During a return stay in Sri Lanka, the civil war taking place within the country escalated to the point where Arulpragasam began to lose family members and friends. She didn't see her father -- a devout and active separatist as part of the Tamil rebellion, which has clashed with the Sinhalese majority – often throughout these years, but her life stabilized once she and the rest of her family were able to make it back to London.
