The Great Seduction (2003) - DVD

A veritable popular success of Quebec cinema in 2003, winner of an incalculable number of awards both at the Jutras and at the Sundance festival, La Grande Séduction also managed the tour de force of seducing the international market. For his first feature film, based on a script by comedian Ken Scott, Jean-François Pouliot could not have dreamed of better.

The small village of Ste-Marie-la-Mauderne lives sparingly from fishing and, despite the social harmony that reigns there, aspires to develop its economy thanks to the establishment of a factory. But, without a doctor at the heart of the community, investors refuse to consider the village as a possible destination. Thus begins for the inhabitants the great operation of seduction aimed at attracting among them a Montreal doctor.

Bringing together some of the most popular Quebec actors (David Boutin, Raymond Bouchard, Clémence Desrochers, Rita Lafontaine, Benoît Brière…), filmed in the charming settings of the island of Harrington Harbour, La Grande Séduction is a film which, without being revolutionary, is all the same eminently sympathetic and quite ready to do good to its spectator. Halfway between the humanist optimism of a Capra and the charming poetry of a Jeunet, the plot also borrows some accents from Pagnol through its social roots. Revealing the ridiculousness of its characters to better make them endearing, this warm film nevertheless fails with a production that is sometimes a little frozen, but quickly makes up for it thanks to its lively and lively dialogues and its convincing interpreters. It's hard not to be seduced! – Helen Faradji --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
