Details: Amazon.ca Since Luciano Pavarotti became associated with the showbiz razzmatazz of the Three Tenors, it almost gives a jolt to the ear to hear him sing accompanied on Live Recital by nothing more than a piano. But that is all he does on this recording--no fireworks, no light-shows, not even a massed chorus--and the results are charming. It's true the voice isn't what it was and that it has lost some of the colours which used to flame out of every note. It's also true that there are even some cracks appearing here and there--but in the same way that the irregularities of a face are what give it character, it is still possible to admire Pavarotti's remarkable instrument. His ability to deliver a song with unaffected gracefulness certainly hasn't changed and his pleasure in singing shines through these short pieces. He pulls off the gentrified Neapolitanisms of Tosti's canzone with just the right mix of emotion and reserve and does a good job in Bellini's florid little salon pieces. Leone Magiera's accompaniments are sometimes disconcertingly irregular but rather good in the orchestral reductions of Cavaradossi's arias from Tosca. --Warwick Thompson Product Description Pavarotti, Luciano
