Details: Originally from Dublin but with their eyes fixed on the American West, its radiant sun and its large sandy expanses, the Thrills succeed with So Much For The City the perfect hold-up of a whole section of vintage American pop 60's. There is no doubt that the Byrds, the Beach Boys and the Buffalo Springfield sit unchallenged at the top of their personal pantheon. Perfectly assumed – up to the cover which could be dated with carbon 14 – the repeated reference to his influences is oddly not as embarrassing as one might have thought. The Thrills however do not spare their effects: steel or acoustic guitars, vocal harmonies, delicately layered organs, alert and bouncy rhythm, mannered orchestrations... Despite this overload, it is without being asked that we board this gleaming time machine. No doubt thanks to the youthful and fragile voice of Conor Deasy, his ability to trick a few little pop wonders ("Santa Cruz", "One Horse Town"), and more generally for the touching naivety and mastery that emerges from this company. --Fabrice Privé
