Details: Amazon.ca Here are 22 carols traditional to French Canada. Some of the music will be instantly familiar; the concert begins with "Sainte Nuit" ("Silent Night") and concludes with "Adeste Fideles" ("O Come All Ye Faithful"), while between is much that will be pleasingly fresh to open minded listeners. The only drawback is that, given the importance of the words, the absence of any texts. In the English-speaking world we may assume we have a monopoly on everything, yet the birth of Christ is celebrated by people from various cultures in virtually all countries of the world. A release such as En la Fête de Noël reminds us of this, jolting us out of our provincialism into remembrance that the Christmas message is for all mankind. Frequently derived from the folk tradition, many of the carols here have been arranged by the composer and organist Raymond Daveluym while a lesser number of pieces are either arranged or the work of professional composers. In performance by La Petite Bande de Montreal, formed in 1998 by organist and chorister Martin Dagnais, these carols have a simple and clear-eyed beauty, refreshingly free of the cloy sentimentality that degrades much modern Christmas music. --Gary S.
