Amazon.ca Still crowned with the public and critical success of American Beauty, director Sam Mendes has the luxury of bringing together Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Jude Law in his second feature film, Road to Perdition, a very successful genre film, even if it seems to have been “formatted” to obtain awards. In the 1930s, near Chicago, Michael Sullivan is the henchman of an Irish underworld boss. When 12-year-old Michael Jr. overhears the activities of his idolized father, the boss' son wants to ensure his silence by murdering the Sullivan family. The murder of the mother and younger son will leave the father and Michael Jr. alone with their fates. Treason, honor, loyalty, responsibility: all the great human feelings seem to have come together along this Path of Perdition. If it offers a real reflection on paternity and filiation, the film is above all a conscientious reconstruction of the era and the mythical spirit of gangster films. Mendes indeed combines sets, costumes, music and lighting and invites us to an in-depth visit of the genre. His calm and serene production, imbued with great classicism, where certain shots are truly poetic, conveys the deep humanity of the characters without ever lapsing into sentimentality. Road to Perdition however suffers from a rare evil: that of sometimes being a little too perfect. --Helen Faradji
