Details: Product Description Blues Gypsy Amazon.ca Apart from a few rare artists like Romane or the Rosenberg brothers, gypsy music has found very few ambassadors since the death of the great Django Reinhardt. Quebec nevertheless has its specialists in the genre: the Blues Gitan ensemble has slept on The Silk Road about fifteen songs – instrumental or sung by the leader Dioni Violletti – which relate the bohemian life of this wandering people. To give consistency to its work in the studio, the troupe has secured the complicity of a panoply of guests – notably the coveted Francis Covan on accordion, Frédéric Beauséjour on double bass and Jean-Denis Levasseur on clarinet. – whose know-how marries perfectly with the bouzouki, the accordion, the oud, the mandolin and the castanets of the five members. Undeniably accomplished musically, The Silk Road unfortunately has serious weaknesses on the vocal side. The sparse vocals do not measure up to the very fair playing of the instrumentalists. That said, if we manage to tame Violletti's unconvincing vocalizations, La Route de la Soie turns out to be an album full of merits, with downright intoxicating music. --Nicolas Houle
