But since Rule 3:36 , Ja Rule has found his identity, that of a gangsta crooner who excels in soulful hip-hop duets. Recipe ? A hoarse and broken voice that blends with the velvety harmonies of Christina Millian ("Between Me & You") or Lil Mo ("Put It On Me" or the sublime "I Cry"). As you don't change a winning recipe, Pain Is Love continues in the line of the "thug" with a big heart. Of course, titles like "The Inc" or "Smokin & Ridin" are enough to prove that Ja Rule perfectly masters dark and menacing rap. But once again, it is the duets that we will remember. the one with Case ("Livin It Up") which skilfully covers a Stevie Wonder classic, "Always On Time" with the delicious Ashanti. And surprise, even Jennifer Lopez surpasses herself on the remix of "I'm Real", a superb soulful hip-hop ode inspired by a sample by Rick James.
